The 'Mother Clone' Zinfandel - A Story Behind the Name

Earlier this month at Taste of Sonoma, I had the pleasure of meeting Julie Pedroncelli St. John of Pedroncelli Winery.  In this video, she shares the story behind the name of their 2007 "Mother Clone" Zinfandel (Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma).

It's always fun for me to meet the people behind the wines, especially those with such warm personalities as Julie.  In addition to the interesting story of how the "Mother Clone" name came to be, this Zinfandel was among my favorites from the entire day.

From the winemaker notes:

2007 Mother Clone Zinfandel
Our Mother Clone Zinfandel is full bodied with many classic Dry Creek Valley characteristics: aromas of ripe blackberry and spice, jammy plum and berry fruit flavors framed with subtle black pepper spice. This is a concentrated wine that offers a great balance of fruit, spice and tannin combined with a long, lush finish. Enjoy upon release or cellar for three more years.

At the event, Julie was also pouring her Dry Rosé of Zinfandel - a crisp, refreshing wine with just enough sweetness, which also pairs well with a variety of summer grilling dishes.  The grapes used to make this Dry Rosé were also sourced from the same Pedroncelli estate vineyards as the "Mother Clone" Zinfandel.

If you find yourself in Sonoma, and you'd like to try the wines yourself, make sure to swing by their tasting room in Geyserville (Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County).  Open daily, there is no charge for tasting at Pedroncelli.

Cheers!

First introduced to this wine in early seventies. Lost track of it here in MI, but found it during a visit to the winery in 2007. Persuaded local distributor to order, and enjoyed 2003, then 2005, but now distributor has stopped ordering!? It remains my favorite, and I've tried a lot of "zin". Pleased to see that you've won a recent reward. Keep up the good work. I'll probably place an order directly from the winery, so that family and friends are not disappointed this holiday season.
